Installed League of Legends and now my PC won’t work… Anyone else have this issue?

I built my PC about a year ago and everything was running fine until tonight. I downloaded the League of Legends client, and it told me I needed to restart my computer to continue. After the restart, my PC is not working! I can’t open any programs, even Task Manager. It just gives me a spinning wheel and then sometimes an error message saying: ‘This application is not responding, do you want to end the process?’ If I hit ‘end,’ my desktop background disappears and I only see my taskbar with a blue screen above it. I keep getting the same message asking me to end the process if I try clicking anything. I can turn off my PC by holding the power button, and it turns on normally. But after logging in, I keep having the same issues. I have no idea where to start troubleshooting. Any help would be appreciated!

Try getting the dump files, these can help with figuring out what’s going wrong. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs. If you can access Windows normally or through Safe Mode, check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files. If you find any, zip them up and upload them. You can use a file-sharing site like catbox.moe or mediafire.com. We need multiple dump files for better analysis, so if you only have one, please upload it and then follow the guide to change your dump type to ‘Small Memory Dump.’

Seems like you’ve been blessed with a headache. I’d suggest uninstalling and staying far away from that game.

I think I’m going to stick to better games from now on :slight_smile:

Update: I restored my PC to a backup from three days ago and everything seems to be working fine now. Strangely, when I first tried to restore it earlier today (before downloading League of Legends), it was still having the same issues. Not sure what caused this! I don’t even like the game that much, so I probably won’t try downloading it again, but I’m really curious about what went wrong.

@Binary
League of Legends recently added a kernel-level anti-cheat (Vanguard). That’s likely what broke your system.

Here’s what kernel-level anti-cheat is supposed to do: ‘Wow, cheaters are gone, amazing!’ But in reality: ‘Why is my PC blue-screening? Oh, it’s Vanguard screwing things up again.’

@Jean
Those TikTok cheaters are usually just prerecorded. Don’t be fooled.

I’m not convinced Vanguard caused this, especially since the issues appeared before you even tried to install the game.

I had no idea that installing games could cause this kind of risk. I usually use Steam and never had issues. This whole situation is just strange.

@Binary
It might be unrelated, but Microsoft had to pause updates on systems with certain Ubisoft games. The issue is likely tied to Vanguard’s anti-cheat.

Kernel-level anti-cheat is crazy. It’s just a game, why do people need that? Most people don’t even play ranked! Maya Rudolph ‘to what end’ gif here

@Binary
Yeah, it’s everywhere now. Anyway, check if you have Windows 24H2 update installed—it could be the cause.

Honestly, I’m not surprised that installing a rootkit broke Windows.

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode? Maybe try without network access, so no internet connection.

Sounds like Vanguard is messing with your system. Just uninstall League of Legends. You’ll thank us later.

This is almost certainly a Vanguard issue. Don’t install anything from Tencent on your main PC; it’s too risky.

I don’t think that’s the case. A lot of Tencent games don’t have issues. This is more of a Riot Games problem.

@Chandler
All Tencent games have kernel anti-cheat, it’s the same system across their games. Vanguard is the same for all of them.
