Will Instagram Notify When You Screenshot?

Hello guys…

I’ve heard mixed information about whether Instagram notifies someone when you take a screenshot of their posts or stories. Can anyone clarify this for me? I want to make sure I understand how screenshots work on Instagram.

Hello, Liz Campbell. No, Instagram cannot determine when a phone takes a screenshot.

Yeah, that notification only happens with Snapchat. But I personally think maybe they should find a way of letting us know, especially with the Direct Messages   some of us be wildin’ in the DMs we don’t want to ever imagine someone’s sharing our ‘DMscapedes’

Currently, Instagram does not notify users when you take screenshots of their posts or stories, unlike some other platforms that notify for disappearing messages or screenshots.

In the past, around February 2018, Instagram experimented with a feature that would display a shutter icon next to usernames if someone took a screenshot of their story. However, this feature was poorly received and caused user frustration, leading Instagram to abandon it.

As it stands now, you can freely screenshot anything you see on Instagram without the user receiving any notification:

  • Posts: You can screenshot regular Instagram posts without alerting the user.
  • Stories: Similarly, taking a screenshot of a story will not trigger any notification to the story creator.

Remember:

  • While Instagram does not notify about screenshots, it’s important to respect user privacy. Avoid publicly sharing screenshots of private stories or posts without the owner’s consent.
  • There are alternative methods to save content from Instagram. Use the “Save” feature for posts or create collections to organize saved content. For stories, some users provide a “swipe up” link for downloadable content.
