Discord officially came out in a public beta version in 2015 . The concept for the app began to be developed earlier in 2015 by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy.

Discord’s evolution into a competitor among communication tools didn’t occur suddenly; rather, it unfolded gradually over time. Here’s a timeline outlining its development:

2015: Discord launches, initially targeting the gaming community by emphasizing features such as voice chat, low latency, and capabilities like screen sharing.

2016-2018: Discord gains momentum within the gaming community due to its user-friendly interface, free access model, and tailored features like servers, roles, and bots designed specifically for gaming communities.

2018-Present: Discord expands its user base beyond gaming circles, becoming a favored platform for diverse online communities. Its adaptability, customization features, and ability to support large groups with clear communication channels contribute to its broad appeal.

While Discord initially focused on gaming, its robust feature set and versatility have positioned it as a formidable competitor to other communication tools such as:

  • TeamSpeak: Popular for voice chat among gamers but lacks Discord’s comprehensive features and ease of use.
  • Skype: A general-purpose tool offering video calls and messaging but often perceived by gamers as cumbersome and resource-intensive compared to Discord.
  • Slack: Widely used in workplaces for collaboration, yet not tailored for real-time chat and large-scale communities like those prevalent in gaming.

Hi guys! on May 13, 2015, it was when discord was released nevertheless came out.

I started using it in 2016. I gues thats when it got popular

In 2015, I discovered Discord via a Reddit advertisement, and I recall how difficult it was to get people to switch from Skype to Discord. I can’t even picture a world without Discord. Hell, in order to stay up to speed on course materials, our professors at school required us to join a discord channel. Unbelievable that it was just five years ago.
