Unmovable space issue... is it fixable?

I just got a new computer and was trying to partition the system drive. But I messed up—I accidentally shrank the wrong disk size, and when I tried merging it back, I didn’t unallocate the new drive. Now I have 585GB of unmovable space. Is this space gone for good, or did I just totally break my computer?

You can try deleting the partitions and starting over. That usually works.

The problem is I only have the system drive left now. I think my mistake was not deleting the other partition before merging them.

Can you share a screenshot of your Disk Manager? Might be easier to see what’s going on.

Hmm, I don’t see the 585GB of unmovable space there.

@JasonJr
It’s hard to tell because the system is in Chinese, but the second line showing the size of available shrink space doesn’t include all the free space. That 585GB is listed as unmovable files.

Ah, got it. If you were shrinking the Windows partition, that’s likely why. You might need to do a fresh install to fix this.

Thanks for the help. I’ll just take it to tech support in the morning to see what they can do.

Are you sure the unmovable space is actually unusable? Sometimes it’s just a temporary lock by the system.

Yeah, it’s definitely unmovable. The disk manager won’t let me do anything with it.

@LogicLegion3
You could try defragmenting the drive first, but if that doesn’t work, a clean install might be your best bet.

Did you check if there’s any software managing the partitions? Sometimes manufacturers include tools that mess with things.

I didn’t think about that. I’ll check if there’s anything like that pre-installed. Thanks for the tip!

Maybe try using third-party partitioning software? Sometimes they handle this stuff better than Windows’ built-in tools.

Good idea. Any recommendations for tools that won’t mess up my system further?

@LogicLegion3
I’ve used MiniTool Partition Wizard before—it’s pretty reliable. Just double-check before applying any changes.

Unmovable space usually means system or hibernation files. Have you tried disabling hibernation to free it up?

No, I haven’t. I’ll look up how to disable hibernation. Thanks for the suggestion!
