Hi guys I am not clear what the distinction is between referencing someone by their username in a caption and tagging them in a photo.

hallo ryan, there is a difference but utilise both items,this establishes a direct connection between the individual and the image. Their username is displayed on the image,on a small box. They will be alerted and mentioned. However, the photo won’t be showcased in a distinct section on their profile.

Mentioning someone by username in a caption allows you to acknowledge their involvement or contribution without creating a direct link to their profile, which may limit visibility and notification. It’s useful for giving credit or initiating a conversation but relies on the person actively monitoring mentions to see it. On the other hand, tagging someone in a photo notifies them directly, linking to their profile for easy access and potentially increasing engagement as others interact with the tagged content. However, tagging should be done judiciously to respect privacy preferences and avoid over-tagging, which could be seen as intrusive.
