Help… I think my computer was hacked

So earlier today I left my computer on while I took a nap. When I came back, I saw that I’d sent the same gif to everyone on my friends list on Discord. I panicked, checked my computer, and found out that AnyDesk had somehow been installed without me knowing. I also saw someone tried to open Chase and Venmo in my browser.

I disconnected the Wi-Fi right away, but I’m not sure what to do now. How can I make sure my computer is safe and stop this hacker?

Do a fresh install of Windows and only keep files you absolutely need. If you use this computer for banking, it’s probably best to change all your passwords too. It’s safer to do this after you wipe the computer clean.

Just to add—when I tried turning on Nord VPN, it told me my connection was intercepted. Makes me worry even more.

Get some antivirus software, like Malwarebytes. I’d download it from another device onto a USB and run it while your computer’s still offline. Clear out anything it finds, restart, and repeat. Then, do one final scan with Windows Defender.

If you’re at all unsure, it’s best to wipe the system and reinstall Windows from a clean thumb drive. After that, go through your online accounts and change all your passwords. Make sure they’re long and unique for each account (use a password manager if needed). Also, set up two-factor authentication with an app if possible. This way, you’ll need your phone for logins, making it more secure.

Honestly, reinstalling Windows is the best move here.

It sounds like you might’ve been tricked into installing something or downloaded a trojaned program. No need to feel bad; it happens to a lot of people. Here’s what I’d suggest:

  • Use a password manager for secure, unique passwords
  • Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (like an app-based one, Authy works well)
  • Run any files from unknown sources through Virustotal.com for an extra check, although it’s not foolproof!

I did a scan with Windows, and it didn’t pick up any malware. I also deleted AnyDesk.

Did you try running Malwarebytes? It might catch things that Windows Defender misses.
