Facebook marketplace buyer scams

Yesterday, I started listing some items that my son no longer wants or needs. Within 30 minutes of posting, two buyers messaged me. One buyer gave her phone number right away, which I ignored. The other buyer asked if the item was available, then asked for my location to pick it up the same day, showing interest in buying the item. Foolishly, I gave my address and phone number. Then, she asked me to verify that I’m a real seller by sending a code through text. This raised my suspicion that she might be scamming me. Upon checking her profile, I noticed it was created just 45 minutes ago and might be using fake pictures. I reported her as a scam on Facebook.

Today, I posted another item and had a similar experience: three buyers messaged me, all with profiles created 30 minutes ago. I’m unsure if they are real buyers or scammers, so I’m now ignoring messages from newly created profiles. Is this a new trend on Facebook Marketplace, where scammers create new profiles to deceive sellers? Sorry for the long post.

Yes, it sounds like you’ve encountered a common Facebook Marketplace scam trend. Ignoring messages from newly created profiles and avoiding sharing personal info until you’ve verified the buyer is a smart move.
